The Last Two Days of January

Wind: yesterday 5-20 knots from W to N, today 0-40 knots from N to W
Sea State: yesterday rippled, today calm in the morning and up to 1 m chop in the afternoon
Visibility: yesterday 0-15 NM, today 1-10 NM
Sky: yesterday fog then sun, today overcast and rain
Temperature: yesterday 7-9 °C, today 8-15 °C
Atmospheric CO2: 413.95 ppm (recorded by NOAA at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii)

It’s been a mix of weather over the past two days. Yesterday began with the fog signal beeping. Later in the morning, it got sunny. It was overcast this morning and afternoon. This evening, it got quite warm up to 15 °C and wet as a storm came in from the west.

There were six ecotour boats in the reserve over the past two days.

Three visitors were on the island today to work on the generator. For at least the next few days, the island is still on backup power. The web cameras and several other non essential systems on the island will remain off to conserve energy.

See the photos below for some views from the past two days:

December so far

Weather:

  • Sky: Overcast
  • Visibility: 15+ miles
  • Wind: 5-15 knots NE
  • Water: Choppy under a metre

Boats/Visitors:

  • Not many boats going by lately, there have been a couple tour boats here and there

Ecological

  • The sea lion numbers seem to have stayed pretty steady since I last counted a few days ago, the winter has been pretty mild so far so maybe thats why the sea lions seem like they don’t want to leave
  • There are 3 elephant seals still, 2 big guys and the young female. They boys have left the female and each other pretty much alone since they got here
  • There are still quite a few eagles hanging around they like to chase the seagulls around

Barred Owl Sighting

Weather:

  • Sky: Overcast, a bit of sun midday
  • Visibility: 10-15+ miles
  • Wind: 5-20 knots NE
  • Water: swells less than a metre

Boats/Visitors:

    • A few boats cruising by today, mostly tour boats
    • Greg came by today with a group of visitors

Ecological

  • I saw a barred owl last night around 7pm when I went to turn off the generator but it was too dark to get a photo, here is a link to our taxonomy page on the barred owl and the last time it was sighted in November 2010,
  • There was also a greater yellow legs running around which flew off before I get a photo of it
  • The elephant seal has been hanging out around the jetty for a few days but took off yesterday and I don’t expect to see her returning anytime soon
  • plenty of sea lions around and I’m having a difficult time keeping them away from the lighthouse, they come back as soon as I am out of their line of sight, would like to extend the fence to protect the burial cairns and lighthouse but we just don’t have all the material we need, we’ll see about that next season though

Beautiful weather

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 0-15 NE
  • Sky: Clear
  • Water: Flat

Boats/Visitors

  • quite a few boats the last couple days, from canoes to sailboats and some people from the college

Maintenance

  • There has been so much solar, I don’t need to run the generator very much, so thats been really nice

Ecological

  • There was a pretty young sea lion pup on the rock by the crane today
  • the pups have not gone in the water today but they are wandering around quite a bit, so they will probably be splashing around soon, I think the female pup might have put her flipper in for a moment but I’m not sure
  • One of the mothers came back very briefly, the tagged female, pink tag T562, who gave birth to the female pup on Jan 4th was here for maybe a couple hours then she went back into the water

Beautiful weather

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 0-15 NE
  • Sky: Partly Cloudy
  • Water: Flat

Boats/Visitors

  • a few boats out today, fishing sailing and ecotours

Maintenance

  • Ran the desal for awhile, tank is topped up, hopefully, no more running it for hours every day

Ecological

  • It looks like the female pup might have gone in today, if she didn’t then she was very close, I will check again tomorrow morning if the pups are in the water
  • the male pup has been beside the house all day, so I know he didn’t go in
  • still one other male elephant on island, Bernard, the alpha
  • closer to 200 sea lions today, maybe due to the nice weather we’ve been having, also a lot of harbour seals on the south rock
  • the number of gulls is slowly increasing, at least from the noise level it seems like it

Still on land

  • Wind: 0-15 SE
  • Sky: Overcast
  • Water: Flat

  • Some ecotours out today

Ecological

  • The pups still have not gone into the water, haven’t even gone near the jetty, they are both still beside the main house, they have been chewing on the grass a bit
  • the pigeon guillemots are back, looks to be a couple hundred of them
  • still around 100 sea lions, and about 50 harbour seals all together on the surrounding rocks
  • there are about 16 geese which I’m sure are starting to look for good nesting spots, there is also an increase in seagulls, I can tell from how noisy they are

  • Wind: 0-15 SE
  • Sky: Overcast

Boats/Visitors

  • A couple of small tours from the college the past few days

Maintenance

  • Lately, I’ve just been trying to get that water tank filled

Ecological

  • The pups still have not gone into the water at all other than day Nemo was in the puddle
  • the alpha is still here but no other males that I’ve seen
  • not very many sea lions, I would say around 100

Ecological

  • So nice to see a few killer whales out there today
  • the male pup has started making his way to the water but hasn’t gone in yet, the female pup hasn’t moved from beside the house
  • the alpha is the only male I see on the island at the moment but I think there are two more around
  • the lonely snow bunting is still around

Splashing around

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 10-25 NE
  • Sky: Sunny
  • Water: Choppy under a metre

Boats/Visitors

  • No visitors lately, there have been a couple of ecotours cruising by

Maintenance

  • Just running the generator and trying to get the fresh water topped up so I can do more pressure washing

Ecological

  • The male pup found a puddle and was splashing around for a bit yesterday, the female pup was heading down there until the youngest male decided to go after them again.
  • There are 3 males on the island and the youngest one is always harassing the pups, the alpha is not as protective of these ones as he was of the two female pups last year. The pups have not been harmed just chased around a lot.
